It starts with a drawing

The design is drawn straight onto stretched cotton, usually in pencil first, then traced in molten wax using a tjanting, a small copper spout that lets you draw a controlled line of hot wax. Larger blocks of pattern are stamped with a copper cap. The wax has to stay at the right temperature the whole time: too cool and it sits on the surface instead of soaking through, too hot and the line spreads and loses its edge.

Then it is dyed in stages

The cloth goes into the first dye bath. Every waxed area stays the original colour; everything else takes the dye. Once it dries, more wax is applied over the parts that should keep that colour, and the cloth is dyed again, darker this time, because you can go from light to dark but never back.

This is the part people underestimate. A piece with five colours in it has been waxed and dyed five separate times, with drying in between. That is where the days go.

The crackle is not a mistake

Near the end, the waxed cloth is deliberately crushed so the wax fractures. Dye seeps into those fractures and leaves the fine veined lines that run across the finished cloth. It is the one part of the process nobody fully controls, and it is the reason two pieces from the same design never match.

Finally, the wax comes out

The cloth is boiled to melt the wax away, then washed and dried. What is left is the piece you see photographed on this site: the actual length, not a sample or a render.

What this means for you

• Each listing is one physical piece. When it sells, that listing is finished.
• Small irregularities are expected. Variation in line weight and crackle is evidence of the hand, not a defect.
• Colours shift slightly between screens. Ask for a daylight photo before you commit if the exact shade matters.
